Overview of SCA´s sustainability activities in the value chain

By Ann-Christin Pålsson & Ellen Riise

Many of the SCA examples at the TOSCA website are based on experiences from the SCA personal care business which includes baby, feminine and incontinence care.

The environmental work for SCA personal care products in Europe is based on a life cycle approach, that includes Active sourcing of raw materials, Clean production within manufacturing facilities and development of Sustainable solutions. The work is based on SCA:s sustainability policy and targets.

Some further information about how SCA is working with the different parts is given below. Please also watch the Caring for people and nature film on YouTube to learn more about how SCA is working with sustainability in the value chain.

ACTIVE SOURCING is about actively seeking high quality, safe and environmentally sound raw materials. Our suppliers have to adhere to strict standards in a Supplier standard that include criteria for quality, product safety, environment, chemicals and code of conduct.

Our strategic goals are:

  • Cooperate with suppliers to reduce the environmental impact in the supply chain
  • Secure that raw materials come from controlled sources

Some examples from SCA’s way of working with active sourcing is available in the Upstream supply chain activity at this website

CLEAN PRODUCTION includes an efficient use of resources and continuous reduction of energy and waste. The production units are working with the environmental management system ISO 14001.

Our strategic goals are to:

  • Reduce CO2 from fossil fuels in mills and factories with 20% between 2005-2020
  • Continuously reduce waste in factories

Some examples of how SCA is working with clean production is available in the Own manufacturing activity at this website

SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS are about innovative, safe and environmentally sound hygiene products and services. Our innovations are based on consumer and customer insight so we can meet the needs in daily life.

Product safety is a primary focus area for hygiene products placed on the market by SCA. We have far-reaching procedures and standards to secure that only safe materials are used in the products we manufacture and market, and that the products comply with relevant legislation.

The performance of the solutions is normally measured by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). An LCA includes the total environmental impact for a product lifecycle including production of raw materials and products, usage, after use and transports between.

Our strategic goals are:

  • Optimize use through more efficient materials, new design and fit
  • Reduce product and packaging waste after use

Some examples of how SCA is working with product development and product safety as well as waste after use is available in the Develop more sustainable products and End-of-life of product activities at this website.
